Shopping for Lingerie

Rusty Chanin, an established fine artist, illustrated Sharyn's excerpt for the exhibition.

The excerpt is a scene from a subplot.  In this scene, Samantha and her friend, Catherine, shop for lingerie.

The painting is oil on canvas.  Samantha reclines in the foreground and Catherine stands before the mirror.

Excerpt from Evening Shift

by Sharyn Bowman

“Your idea to come to Victoria’s Secret was a great one, Samantha.” Catherine assessed herself in the dressing room mirror as she spoke.  “My lingerie needs a new look.”

I wriggled into a nightgown.  Catherine told me it’d look better if I had good abs.  She was right.  My exercise routine kept me firm, but my job at the hospital never left me with the time or the inclination to build my muscles to the max.

Catherine’s body looked like elegant sculpture.  She struck a pose for me.  I told her that the gown she was wearing didn’t show off her breasts well.  We left the dressing room to search for our next choices.

Over an hour later, we had both narrowed our possibilities to four gowns.  My favorite was an ankle-length see-through black lace with a plunging back.  I turned away from Catherine and swayed my hips.

“That’ll get you and Dan going.”  She poked the small of my back.

“He doesn’t know it’s an erogenous zone.”

“Samantha, there are ways to tell men these things.”

“I know that, Catherine.”  I pointed to the gowns slung over her arm.  “You’re getting all babydolls?”

“Absolutely.  What do you think of this one?”

She slipped on a miniscule black chiffon gown.  The sides were slit from sequin-trimmed hem to armhole and connected by two black satin ribbons on each side.  She held up the matching black satin thong.

“It’s a spectacular two-piece outfit,” I said.

We laughed, gathered up our gowns, and headed for the cashier.

Some may wonder why the excerpt is from a subplot of Evening Shift.

This illustration was a collaborative effort between writer and painter.
Rusty Chanin created the painting with hopes of selling it.  I didn't think a painting of the scene of the crime would have much appeal for Rusty's potential buyers.
