I learned the importance of giving back from my family. I began volunteering in hospitals when I was in high school. I have continued to volunteer my energy and skills to various organizations over the years. There are always organizations in need of volunteer help; indeed, many nonprofits could not survive without that help.
I am committed to having Sharyn Bowman Arts contribute a significant amount toward helping nonprofit organizations reach their goals.
I have acted as the volunteer photographer for the Silver Spring (MD) Library at their fundraising and entertainment events for several years. I photographed a fundraiser for the Early Literacy Center, which is in the new library that will opened in May, 2015. While the county paid for the library construction, the Early Literacy Center will be funded solely from money raised by volunteers. To date, they raised more than $100,000.00.
George Pelecanos, award winning, internationally published crime fiction writer, was the speaker at the Early Literacy Center event. George lives in Silver Spring and is a strong supporter of the Library. George began by describing his interest in the library and then read extensively from one of his novels, Hard Revolution.
Last year, while I was still serving as National President of the National League of American Pen Women, Inc. I produced two videos intended to showcase the talents of the artists, writers and composers who are members of this organization. I received a very enthusiastic response from members and what I had planned as perhaps one three minute video became two videos of about six minutes each.
